Understanding the connections between craft and the human aging experience.
Science has documented that young children exposed to craft education demonstrate higher levels of math and science skills, as well as quicker language acquisition. The connection between hand and brain is not one directional with the brain dictating the handwork. It appears that the work of our hands shapes our brains as well. Craft and hand activity is also synonymous with community to the extent that we use phrases like “keep me in the loop” (knitting reference).
The “anecdote” is familiar. We know of the sharp, attuned, witty and charismatic aged craftsperson. Knitter, beader, woodworker, bread maker, writer or musician, they are living treasures in the community. Is there a correlation between the activities of their hands and the acuity of their minds and persona? How do craft activities affect our aging brains? At any age, is there a correlation between these activities and how well we age? We know that maintaining community and social connection is vital to healthy aging, but might craft activities play a role in more fully building these social bonds?
CiRCA promotes the deeper understanding of these important questions, and celebrates the importance of our intergenerational craft lineage.
To more fully understand the tacit knowledge within our minds and bodies that enable us to create at heightened and refined levels. To enable the intergenerational dialogue needed to pass this knowledge forward.
Mission
To preserve existing craft knowledge. To enhance lives through encouraging craft practice. To expand our knowledge of how craft practices relate to and influence the aging body and brain.
Goals
Our mobile workshops engage communities within town centers as well as rural communities further afar. With a goal to educate, expand community, build manual capacity for the aging, and bolster intergenerational dialogue, our workshops meet the community where they are. They are intended to be fun and creative experiences for all participants in any walk of life.
